Mastering Vegan Cooking: Tips and Tricks for Delicious Plant-Based Meals

Many people are interested in a more plant-infused diet but don’t know where to start. Vegan cooking can indeed feel like a daunting task, especially when you’re new to it. However, with the right tips and tricks, you can create delicious and satisfying plant-based meals that make the transition enjoyable and effortless.

Start with the Basics

Having a well-stocked pantry is the foundation of successful vegan cooking. Here are some essentials every vegan kitchen should have:

Legumes

Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, and kidney beans are great sources of protein and can be used in a variety of dishes. Dried legumes are super cheap, can be bought in bulk online, and last forever in the pantry.

Grains

Rice, oats, and pasta provide necessary carbohydrates, can be stored for long time and makes up the base for most dishes.

Nuts and Seeds

Many vegan recipes call for expensive nuts like cashews and pine nuts. But often you can actually replace them for cheaper ones. Sunflower seed is my top choice for use in home made pesto or roasted and added to a sallad.

Nutritional Yeast

This magical ingredient adds a cheesy flavor to dishes and is packed with B vitamins. It’s an excellent replacement for expensive vegan cheese. It can also be used to add deap layers of flavor to creamy sauces, spreads etc.

Spices and Herbs

Keep a variety of spices and herbs on hand to add flavor to your meals. Must-haves include garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cumin, turmeric, basil, thyme, soy sauce, and sriracha.

Dry Soy Mince (textured soy protein)

An excellent, versatile protein source that can be used in a variety of dishes. Like dried legumes, it is super cheap, can be bought in bulk, and has a long shelf life.

Get familiar with lentil soup and curry

Every month I buy atleast 10 packs of crushed tomatoes and e few cans of coconut milk. With this and the lentils, soy mince and chickpeas you can easily make a tasty curry, hearty lentil soup or classic bolognese in just a few minutes. Perfect for meal prep.

Cooking Tips for Flavorful Vegan Meals

1. Experiment with Spices and Herbs – Spices and herbs are your best friends in vegan cooking. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations to find flavors you love. And don’t be afraid to use more herbs than the recipe calls for. There is no such thing as too much herbs!

2. Use Nutritional Yeast – Nutritional yeast is a must-have for adding a cheesy, umami flavor to your meals. Sprinkle it on popcorn, mix it into pasta sauces, or use it to make vegan cheese.

3. Master the Art of Tofu – Tofu and tempeh are versatile sources of protein. Press tofu to remove excess moisture before cooking for a better texture. Marinate both tofu and tempeh to infuse them with flavor. My best trick to remove moisture from tofu is to put it in the freezer the day before, when it’s defrosted before marinated the moisture is drained out more efficiently and the tofu absorbs the marinade much better. 4. Cook and shop in Batches- Prepare batches of grains, beans, seitan and roasted vegetables to use throughout the week. Try to reduce shopping to one big grocery shopping occation every month with complementary grocery shopping weekly. This will save you both time and money as well as ensure you always have healthy meal components ready to go.

Good luck cooking!
